Kindergator Update 10.25.19

Kindergator Update 10.25.19 It was wonderful to meet with everyone this week and last week at conferences. I learned so much more about the kiddos as we talked. Thank you for taking time to come in! As always, if you have questions that have come up since our conference, please let us know. Reading: We worked on noticing and sounding out word endings. That means -ing, -ly, -ed, -s or -es. We listened for words with endings in the spooky fiction stories we read in class and then classified them into groups based on what ending they had. We spent lots of time on the tricky -ed ending that can make the sound “d” or “t” or “ed.” Math :   We took a break from classifying lessons and moved onto comparing numbers. We worked on vocabulary like more, greater, bigger and less, lesser, smaller. We learned how to use “the buddy system” to compare numbers by lining dots up and seeing which ones have buddies and which ones are extras. Writing: We are still working on great cha...

KIndergator Update 10.12.19

We have a whole pumpkin patch in class thanks to you! Next week we will be busy carving and rolling them and hopefully, if my plan matched my cooking skill, eating their insides! Reading: We are still working hard on “how to retell a story” starting with characters and setting then moving on to the conflict and resolution. We still have lots of kiddos starting their retelling with a pronoun instead of the character’s name or description so we might be working on this skill for a bit longer.   We are continuing with blending sounds and introduced the “trick” of letters that work together to make a sound in some of our groups this week with the sw, sc, and st sounds. We reviewed the difference between real reading and fake fiction as we leaned some cool things about pumpkins. Did you know they are fruit? Berries? Related to the cucumber family? Math :   We are into 3d shapes like cone, cylinder, cube and sphere. We were composing the shapes and identifying the parts: ...

Kindergator Update 10.4.19 and Pumpkin Request

Kindergator Update 10.4.19 We had a fun STEM day today and I will post lots of pictures on the BLOG this weekend for you to see the great work your child did to create a brand new roller coaster! Reading: We are working hard on “how to retell a story” starting with characters and setting then moving on to the conflict and resolution. We are continuing with blending sounds and introduced the “trick” of letters that work together to make a sound in some of our groups this week with the sw, sc, and st sounds. We did all this during out unit on pumpkins! Math :   We are into 3d shapes like cone, cylinder, cube and sphere. Just pronouncing the word sphere is funny for many kids. We have shifted our vocabulary to edges, faces and vertices as we describe these shapes and we even used them in our roller coasters today to see which shapes move best. The winner was sphere by the way. Writing: We are working on adding descriptive color words to writing like “a basketball or...
