Kindergator Update 10.4.19

We had a fun STEM day today and I will post lots of pictures on the BLOG this weekend for you to see the great work your child did to create a brand new roller coaster!

Reading: We are working hard on “how to retell a story” starting with characters and setting then moving on to the conflict and resolution. We are continuing with blending sounds and introduced the “trick” of letters that work together to make a sound in some of our groups this week with the sw, sc, and st sounds. We did all this during out unit on pumpkins!

Math:  We are into 3d shapes like cone, cylinder, cube and sphere. Just pronouncing the word sphere is funny for many kids. We have shifted our vocabulary to edges, faces and vertices as we describe these shapes and we even used them in our roller coasters today to see which shapes move best. The winner was sphere by the way.

Writing: We are working on adding descriptive color words to writing like “a basketball orange shirt” or “lollipop blue boots.” We will be working on descriptive words for a while as we continuing working on writing well-spaced sentences.

Please return your conference confirmation forms if you have not already. We are missing a few.

We really want to carve pumpkins in class next week. Please consider donating carving size pumpkins for our class so we can study them inside and out. We also need small pumpkins for a mini STEM project on shape and motion as we hold our own pumpkin rolling contest!

We are working hard to assess the kiddos for report cards and conferences. Much of this is done one-on-one. Please make sure your child is coming to school on time each day. Coming in late may mean your child misses their play time to make up work they missed.

KIndergator Update 9.14

I am watching a 6 year old jump off a high diving board here at Georgia Tech as I type this. There is so much excitement and fear at the same time in her eyes as she gets ready to jump. It reminds me of how our kiddos look right before they sound out a big word in class. It is such fun to watch. KIndergator Update

Happy first week of Kindergarten! It has been a really smooth transition so far, so thank you parents. Here are some things we worked on this week: Rules, rules and more rules. What to do if you don't know what to do......raise your hand or look for a clue! Who are the people in your campground (school)? Who are the people in you camp (through sharing our all about me bags)? Next week we move into our regular schedule and begin curriculum. Our focus will be getting used to the schedule, building independence and an "I can" attitude. Look for an update next week to see how well we did. Kindergator Update 9.21 and some requests

Break time! I hope you have a wonderful week off. We can all use some rest and hopefully some fall weather. Here are some things we worked on this week. Reading: We continued working on the difference between real reading and fake fiction with our unit about apples. We also began our talk of how to do a great story retelling by focusing on the who (characters) and where (setting) in our first sentence. Math: We worked on comparing and contrasting 2d shapes and introduced vocabulary for 3d shapes such as edges, vertices and faces. Social Studies: We compared and contrasted the GA and US flags. Vocabulary: Cube, edge, vertices, orchard, pollen, nectar, symbol Big Things: We have had some big chats this week about how we treat others. Within the past week I have heard kids tell Mrs. Watson she doesn't pack them up right.
