Kindergator Update 10.25.19

Kindergator Update 10.25.19

It was wonderful to meet with everyone this week and last week at conferences. I learned so much more about the kiddos as we talked. Thank you for taking time to come in! As always, if you have questions that have come up since our conference, please let us know.

Reading: We worked on noticing and sounding out word endings. That means -ing, -ly, -ed, -s or -es. We listened for words with endings in the spooky fiction stories we read in class and then classified them into groups based on what ending they had. We spent lots of time on the tricky -ed ending that can make the sound “d” or “t” or “ed.”

Math:  We took a break from classifying lessons and moved onto comparing numbers. We worked on vocabulary like more, greater, bigger and less, lesser, smaller. We learned how to use “the buddy system” to compare numbers by lining dots up and seeing which ones have buddies and which ones are extras.

Writing: We are still working on great character description sentences. This includes telling about color, size, material, or texture of the character they create. As we work on this we are hitting great sentence details like capitalized beginnings, spaces and ending marks. We had a huge review week on handwriting and noticing which letters are tall, small or fall into the ground. BY now the students should be pretty consistently fitting their letters into the correct spacing on the lines of their journal. Tall letters take up the whole space and small from dotted line to the ground. We also cleared up the difference between tall and capital letters. Not every tall letter is capital. Letters like b or d are tall but lowercase.

Vocabulary: comparing, contrasting, greater, lesser, capital, capitalize

Big Things:
Welcome to our new classmate Dillan Nyhan. He joined our class last week and we are so excited to have him with us.

Thank you again for the pumpkins. We used them for STEM, math lessons and then cooked some for out pumpkin taste testing day. We had muffins, cookies, soup and toasted seeds. I hope the kiddos enjoyed the foods. At Kendal and Mila’s insistence, I will post the recipes on the BLOG. By the way, nobody ever asks me for recipes to my (usually not so great) cooking so I am really excited about this huge honor!!!!!!!

Thank You To:
  • Mila, Ethan, Kendal and Daniel who earned their STAR behavior this week.
  • Vampire the bat who visited our class as Kendal’s guest.
  • Daniel for his reading bravery, picking our book after book in our class library to read to us each day!
  • Mae-Claire who counted to 100 this week and gave up one dime to her brother who found her sneaky letter C
  • Fiona and Jacob for making amazing jewelry for their classmates and teachers
  • Avery for incredible play-doh work modeling cones three different ways
  • Dillan, Daniel, and Mila who made binoculars for us out of paper towel rolls this week
  • Eldabelle for making the class prescription glasses
  • Sawyer for his new neatest handwriting plan
  • Gabe for helping us spell words in the the -ast rhyming family
