KIndergator Update 10.12.19
We have a whole pumpkin patch in class thanks to you! Next
week we will be busy carving and rolling them and hopefully, if my plan matched
my cooking skill, eating their insides!
Reading: We are still working hard on “how to retell
a story” starting with characters and setting then moving on to the conflict
and resolution. We still have lots of kiddos starting their retelling with a
pronoun instead of the character’s name or description so we might be working
on this skill for a bit longer. We are
continuing with blending sounds and introduced the “trick” of letters that work
together to make a sound in some of our groups this week with the sw, sc, and
st sounds. We reviewed the difference between real reading and fake fiction as
we leaned some cool things about pumpkins. Did you know they are fruit?
Berries? Related to the cucumber family?
Math: We are into
3d shapes like cone, cylinder, cube and sphere. We were composing the shapes
and identifying the parts: faces, edges, vertices, base. We looked at real life
examples of them in the world around us and sorted shapes into 2d and 3d
groups.
Writing: We looked at other ways to add describing
words to our writing through size words (huge, massive, tiny, wee) and through
texture words (furry, scaly, slimy). We had to take a character card, name it
and describe it three ways in one great sentence! We continued with multiple
meaning Monday where we look at how one word can mean different things. This
week we talked about the words trip, top and play. We also wrote the most amazing descriptive character sentences about either a hog, bat, bunny or fish. Ask your child to tell you how they described their character.
Vocabulary: characters, setting, conflict,
resolution, edge, vertices, face, describe, gravity, lots of words about size
and texture.
Big Things:
Don’t forget every day next week is early release due to
conferences. Your child will leave school each day at 12:30. Our lunch time
will be different as well.
Please be on time for your child’s conference. They are only
30 minutes and run back to back so time us always tight!
We will be making jack o lanterns next week in class and
doing two pumpkin related STEM activities. We only need to keep one big jack o
lantern for our garden to help us learn about decomposition. The rest can go
back home. If you sent in a big pumpkin and want it back as jack o’ lantern, please email me to let me
know!
Thank You To:
- Fiona who was voted our leader of the month for October by her classmates!
- Fiona’s family for sending in new / more art supplies. The kiddos are loving creative time each day and coming up with some super fun ideas!
