Kindergator Update 4.20.19

We had a chance to meet our future kindergarteners today at our kindergarten camp. I cannot believe it has been a year since you guys and your little ones walked through on your first visit to Addison. They have grown so much! Reading: We worked on researching about spiders this week. We compared and contrasted fiction versus non-fiction books, then did the same for two non-fiction texts about spiders. We played games where each child had either a main idea paper or details paper and they had to work to find all the papers that fit together around the same main idea. These kids LOVE non-fiction by the way and some have learned to love spiders too! We also painted pattern papers to use for our Eric Carle author study unit.   Mrs. Walkup would like you to know that your children did the best pattern painting of any class we ever had! Science: We compared and contrasted animals. We reviewed animal grouping and the different attributes we can look at when discussing a...

Kindergator Update 4.14

Hello Kindergator parents! We have had a fun time adjusting to our new schedule this week. I took them to computer lab at the wrong time twice on Monday and almost missed getting there at the right time. Whew. Even with all the changes we squeezed some fun learning activities this week. Reading : We finished our character traits, conflicts and connections unit. And we were so impressed with the connections the students were able to come up with. After hearing that a frog almost drowned in our story Thursday and was saved by a chicken (that was really an alligator) many of our students said they connected to almost drowning in their own pools. That helped us decide to start our accident prevention unit earlier than usual. We also worked on our phonics skills through team games such as silent spelling and partner word search. We are working hard to help them learn and practice the skills needed to make group dynamics successful. We have seen lots of growth in our kids in th...

Dear Kindergator Parents, Our Habit of the Month for April and May is Sharpen the Saw. Sharpen the Saw means preserving and enhancing the greatest asset you have--you. Here are some examples of activities: Physical: Beneficial eating, exercising, and resting Social/Emotional: Making social and meaningful connections with others Mental: Learning, reading, writing, and teaching Spiritual: Spending time in nature, expanding spiritual self through meditation, music, art, prayer, or service For this habit, we would like to request a printed picture of your child “Sharpening the Saw”! We will use the picture for our hallway display for the night of the Gator Gala. If you could send in a picture by April 15 th of your child “...

Kindergator Update 3.30.19

Happy Spring Break Ya’all!!! We squeezed lots o’ leanrin’ into this pre-vacation week. Reading : We continued our unit on the 3C’s…character traits, conflicts and connections. We read a few funny Frog and Toad stories to help us identify all of those elementa. We also delved deeper into our frog and shark research. We had a great question from one of our students this week. “If sharks don’t have bones why are they in the fish /vertebrate group?” Our minds were completely blown and we had to look up the answer to that one with some research of our own. Math : We worked on positional words with a positional word hide and seek game. This is an easy game to play at home. Have the kids choose a positional word like above, under, beneath, between and then they hide an object in a place that matches that word then give clues to their family on how to find it using positional clues like, “it is above the stove and in a cabinet.” Science : We worked on how scientists classify ...
