Kindergator Update 4.14
Hello Kindergator parents! We have had a fun time adjusting
to our new schedule this week. I took them to computer lab at the wrong time
twice on Monday and almost missed getting there at the right time. Whew. Even
with all the changes we squeezed some fun learning activities this week.
Reading: We finished our character traits, conflicts and
connections unit. And we were so impressed with the connections the students
were able to come up with. After hearing that a frog almost drowned in our
story Thursday and was saved by a chicken (that was really an alligator) many
of our students said they connected to almost drowning in their own pools. That
helped us decide to start our accident prevention unit earlier than usual.
We also worked on our phonics skills through team games such
as silent spelling and partner word search. We are working hard to help them
learn and practice the skills needed to make group dynamics successful. We have
seen lots of growth in our kids in this area so far this year and will be doing
much more with this skill in the next few weeks.
Math: We wrapped up our unit on positional words with a few
games where students had to use positional words to describe where something
was in relation to a grid on the page and on the carpet in class. It was great
help with learning positional words and practicing positional skills.
Social Studies: We learned about the White House and created
an illustration using our backlight boxes of what it looks like.
Science: We compared and contrasted animal attributes and
the attributes of seeds. We will be working with plants and animals for the
rest of the quarter.
Writing: We focused on writing really creative resolutions
for our big conflicts: Mrs. Watson’s pudding shirt, Jaliegh’s terrible sneeze
and Reese’s trip to planet stinky sock. It was so fun to hear their ideas for
how to fix such unique problems.
Vocabulary: attributes, reptiles, amphibians, mammals,
birds, enemies, pessimist, optimist, full of wonder, curious
BIG THINGS:
We are in need of more volunteers for Parent Pedagogy week.
So far I only have 3 parents who have volunteered. (Thank you Mrs. Hassen, Mrs.
Di Cicco and Mrs. Beeman.) We hope to fill up the entire week so please
consider coming in to volunteer. The current schedule is below.
We will be doing lots of painting next week, while Mrs.
Watson will be working in upper grades for testing. We have smocks for the
students, but there is always some mess that goes along with painting. Please
have your child wear older, messier clothes to school each day just in case.
Speaking of clothing…..for our little girls, please be sure
to send them on with a sweater if they have small strap tops. The cafeteria and
sometimes our room can be freezing without one. And please do not let them wear
flip-flops if possible. Our playground it wood chipped and sometimes has ant
piles we don’t know about. Closed toed shoes are the best choice.
Thank you to:
- Everyone who made Mrs. Watson’s birthday so special. She loved all the gifts, cards and flowers. She was blown away!
- Kendal who earned STAR behavior again this week.
- Jaliegh and Reese for being good sports when we made them the subjects of our stories about sneezes and stinky socks.
- Ava for a super creative transformation this week. Her drawing of a buzzing bee was great!
- Gustavo for working really hard on his math and really impressing us with his new skills.
