KIndergator Update 9.14
I am watching a 6 year old jump off a high diving board here
at Georgia Tech as I type this. There is so much excitement and fear at the
same time in her eyes as she gets ready to jump. It reminds me of how our
kiddos look right before they sound out a big word in class. It is such fun to
watch. Here are some things we worked on this week:
Reading: We continued blending sounds together in
guided reading groups. We began introducing the “letters that work together to
make one sound” trick with blends like (sw, sn, st, sp). We also began our
study of the parts of a story by discussing characters. Did you know anything
can me a character if you write a story about it? We read about a blue dot as a
character and a chameleon. We also reviewed th difference between real reading
and fake fiction through our topic of chameleons this week.
Math: We finished naming all the 2d shapes and
describing them. Next week we will begin “eating” them. If your child can
correctly describe the attributes of each shape or what makes a shape that
shape, they can pick a cracker out with that shape to eat. This usually makes
assessing what they know fun and we hope they will practice describing the
shapes to you at home. We already have 10 out of 18 kids counting to 100 and 14
out of 18 counting over 50. Thanks for reinforcing the skill at home. We hope
to get the whole class to 100 soon. If you are looking for a fun way to
practice this, take turns counting in the car. If you say 1, they say 2 and so
on and so on. If you want o make it really tricky…start with a number other
than 1!
Writing: We finished our first books!!! They are hanging on
the wall outside class, so come on down and take a look if you get the chance.
We are really working on the concept of tall and small letters so please help
support this with the letter of the week if you can.
Vocabulary: Hexagon, triangle, square, rectangle, circle,
angle, character, reptile, prehensile, and the difference between the words
sides and size. (For example a square has 4 sides and they are all the same
size.)
Big Things:
Field Trip next Wednesday, September 19th. PLEASE
do not send in lunch boxes that day. We take only sack lunches in paper bags
with us on the trip so nothing will get lost. Please do not send your child in
sandals or flip flops as there is some rough terrain and rough smelling manure
on the farm.
Have you noticed your child’s pencil grip? Take time to
notice how they are holding a pencil. An improper grip can cause lots of pain
over time and a reluctance to write. We are working on correcting some grips in
class and can help if you need!
How is your child doing with the difference between 6 and 9?
We use a trick to help them remember “6 has a belly that touches the ground, 9
has a head up top that is round) Hope that helps!
Thank you to:
Dilan, Elle and Harper J for earning STAR behavior this
week!

Carnival tonight. You are making it a special night for the kids.

did not make a list of who sent them, but thank you to all!
All our parents who have volunteered in science lab so far.
Our lessons are going beautifully because we have lots of wonderful helpers and
I know Mrs. Knobbe is over the moon about it.
