Kindergator Update 1.10.20

Kindergator Update 1.10.20

Happy new year kindergator parents! We are back in full swing. Here are the things we are working on in class. This week our students picked 4 academic goals for themselves for the rest of the year. They range from reading a level 2 book, to learning how to tie their shoes.  We have posted these goals outside the classroom and will check in frequently to see the progress we have made. Each week, we will spend some time helping them to reach their individual goals. Some have already begun working on them!

Reading: We started our unit on Fairy Tales. For this unit we will be learning what the attributes of a fairy tale are, how to retell a fiction story in summarized form and how to compare and contrast fiction stories. We will read original versions of each tale then alternate versions. This week we started "The Frog Prince." We are also working on our big unit of why vowels change their sounds from short to long. They usually only do this if there is a bully-e, two vowels together (go walking), y at the end of a word or a sight word. We will be working on this unit for the whole quarter.

Math: We began our unit on counting. Ask your child what 3 powers addition has and they should be able to tell you: to put together, make more and make bigger. We are learning what addition math models look like and how to use counting on from the bigger number to add faster.

Writing: As we work on the parts of a story in reading and improve our skills in writing we are taking a closer look at what a “conflict / problem” is and what different kinds of conflict we can get our characters into. We had fun pretending to be silly characters this week (a water bottle, a pencil, a duck and Mrs. Ricci) and put them through lots of different kinds of conflicts. We have also begun learning how to use a rubric / checklist to edit our own writing. They did wonderfully with it this Thursday.

Vocabulary: addition, conflict, author, illustrator, fairy tale, compose, decompose

Big Things:
Report cards were posted on ParentVue this week to show your child’s progress. Please take a minute to look them over. As always please let us know if you have any questions.

Welcome to our new student, Madison, who joined our class this week. We are very excited to have her with us!

Thank You To:

  • Avery who was voted our Camper of the Month by her classmates.
  • Daniel, Carter, Ethan, Elaina, Mae-Claire and Eldabelle who earned their STAR behavior this week. We have added some new prizes for the second half of the year like....write with pen all day, sit at Mrs. Powers desk or bring a game from home for the week.
  • Kendal, and Audrey who finished the counting by counting backwards from 100 by 1s, 5s and 10s
  • Harrison who has been a great friend to our new student Madison by helping her learn about the classroom and how we do what we do
  • Mason who showed us his disco pose when writing on the interactive board and wrote a great story about Will stealing all his chocolate chips.
  • Will who was reading a book about horses and ponies and sounded out the word “domesticated” which has 12 letters by the way.
  • Fiona for putting Mrs. Ricci into conflict with a tornado that took everything away except her cat.
  • Sawyer for an amazing illustration of a drawbridge for his story this week
  • Daniel and Jacob for finishing the word search challenge
  • Mae-Claire for my adorable Teacher nutcracker that looks just like me. It sits on my desk and reminds me to eat more nuts
  • Duncan, Gabe and Caitlin who all turned their letter w into a funny fork that only ate meat
  • Lennox and Dillan who solved a really hard word problem about how many Christmas toys my brother Kevin got as presents and had to know to leave out the socks because we all know they are not toys
