Kindergator Update 1.25

My goodness has this week flown by. We got to give out our first trophies for sight words and it was the highlight of our year to see their faces as they made their choices and proudly posed next to them at their seats all day. What fun! Here are some things you might want to know about our week:

Reading: We continued our unit on comparing and contrasting fairy tales with Goldilocks and the Three Bears, The Snow Bears, Somebody and the Three Blairs and Leola and the Honeybears. Most of the class knows what things make up a fairy tale now and that not all fairy tales have all the elements. Go ahead and ask them (fingers crossed) and see how much they have learned.

Math: We continued working on our addition fluency strategies by evaluating our answers to see if we had the biggest number in the answer spot, by working on the +0 rule, and +1 rule. We even began working on some big challenges like…
9 + 3 = 16 (true or false)
5 + 4 = 8 + 1 (true or false) and..
7 + ? = 10 (figure out the ?)
So we have really been able to take it to the next level for sure.

Writing: We finished our first full opinion writing piece. Next week we will be working on our independent writing fair pieces. Each year Cobb county holds a writing contest at each grade level to honor great writing. First we pick a class winner, then grade level winner, then county winner and maybe even state winner. Addison has had quite a few county and state winners in the past few years in kindergarten and we are hopeful (fingers crossed) there will be more this year.

Science: We began our unit on living versus non-living things. We prepared for our STEM unit next week by learning about Arctic Habitats and the living and non-living things within them.

Big Things:

By the end of the year, your child must know their place in space from home address all the way to continent. This is a really difficult standard for them to learn so we would appreciate as much help reviewing this as possible. Sometime in the fourth quarter, we do a project where the kids who learn this address get to make and mail a postcard to their home. If they know their address, it will get there, but if not, it won’t so please keep practicing!

Thank you too:

  • Reese’s mom for the MOST delicious cinnamon buns! Mrs. Walkups tummy seemed to enjoy them lots.
  • Elle, Gustavo, Arnold, Sarah Kate, Olivia, Grant, Pennelope and Aspen for earning their STAR behavior for the week. We had many compliments on our behavior in and out of the classroom and it shows.
  • Elle for not wearing her cat ears to class (haha).
  • Everyone who returned Mrs. Reaves permission to be photographed form. Taping some of her lessons is a requirement for student teaching so I know she truly appreciates you giving her permission.
  • Arnold for rockin’ the coolest birthday bling necklace.
  • Everyone for the amazing birthday cards, gifts, treats and hugs. It was such as special day for me and I am so thankful to have you guys thinking of me. Thank you, thank you!!!!
