Kindergator Update 9.21 and some requests

Break time! I hope you have a wonderful week off. We can all use some rest and hopefully some fall weather. Here are some things we worked on this week.

Reading: We continued working on the difference between real reading and fake fiction with our unit about apples. We also began our talk of how to do a great story retelling by focusing on the who (characters) and where (setting) in our first sentence.

Math: We worked on comparing and contrasting 2d shapes and introduced vocabulary for 3d shapes such as edges, vertices and faces.

Social Studies: We compared and contrasted the GA and US flags.

Vocabulary: Cube, edge, vertices, orchard, pollen, nectar, symbol

Big Things:

We have had some big chats this week about how we treat others. Within the past week I have heard kids tell Mrs. Watson she doesn't pack them up right. After a student dropped their fruit on the ground they told Mrs. Watson she was supposed to clean it up for them. She and Mrs. McGhee have been told just this week that they don't have to be listened to, that they are wrong,  or that they don't want to listen to them. Please talk with your child about thanking the people that help them and thinking about how they talk to all the adults in the building.  We have been headed in a really positive direction with our behavior overall and I hope we can get this one aspect out of the way soon.

We have been studying apples this week and the kids were really excited about all the things they can do with apples. So if you pass by any apple butter, apple jelly, cider, or any other apple products while shopping, please consider sending some into class for the kids to try.

We are about to head into our pumpkin unit when we get back from break. We want to carve pumpkins in class together. Please email me if you are able to send in a medium size pumpkin for us to carve up in class. We will need about 6.

Conference Week is coming up October 15-19. I will be sending home conference scheduling forms with an assigned date/ time when we return from break. If there is any one date/ time that will not work for you or is best for you, please email me to let me know and I will try to accommodate your needs as best I can. The students will be dismissed between 12:15-12:30 that week to provide more time during the day for us to meet.

We are almost at the end of the first quarter:

So far we have 15 out of 18 students who have met the counting to 50 standard and most of those are already counting to 100. Sometimes the struggle is that your child pronounces the "th" in thirty as an "f" sound and then gets jumbled between the 30s and 40's. Check out how your child pronounces their numbers. Car drives are great times to practice counting. We really want to get everybody in class to reach that standard so we can celebrate.

We have 16 out of 18 students who have reached or exceeded knowing 12 consonant sounds already. That is exciting for sure! Y seems to be a struggle this year as lots of kids make a "w" sound for it so we have been working on that in class.

Thank you to:

Landon for being our first to bring in multiple meaning words for our chart. He got to move his name up and up for extending his learning at home!

Jackson and his family for coming up with LOTS of multiple meaning words for us to learn about. There were so many, we will be doing some of his after break too!

Dilan, Jackson, Elle, Gustavo, Pennelope, Reese, Harper J., Arnold and Zeb for earning their STAR behavior.

Fennec Fox and Peaches the Mermaid for visiting our classroom this week when their friends earned STAR behavior!

Reese and Elle who are the first to "eat" all the 2d shapes by defining them to us and picking a food that matches!
