Kindergator Update 8.9.19

Happy first full week of school! We were all very tired this Friday afternoon from a big, full week of kindergarten. Here are some things we worked on in class this week:

Reading: We focused on using the illustrations only to figure out what was happening in the stories we read. We want our kiddos to use the pictures to support their ideas and predictions when reading. We began discussing what sight words are and read our first books in class. Hopefully they have brought these books home to read to you. We are still getting to know what each child is capable of doing, so if it seems the book is too easy or too hard right now, it is because we are still figuring all our levels out.

Math: We worked on counting strategies when counting shapes on a paper or objects in our hand. The big lesson is moving your mouth and your hand at the same rate, so you are assigning each object one number. Our standard this quarter is counting to 50 by ones and objects accurately. We thought about what they number 0 meant and what we would want zero of in our class or just 1 of in our life.

Writing: We began discussing where stories come from and figured out the best stories come from our own brains. Next, we made three sentence oral stories. Starting Tuesday, week we will begin learning how to illustrate these stories and then……..writing them!

Phonics and Handwriting: We focused on the size of letters (tall, small or fall)

Vocabulary for the Week: illustrations (ask them to say this to you in their funny voice), represent, ten-frame (have them draw one for you)

Big Things: It was very nice to see everyone again last night. Thank you for coming to our Open House. I forgot to emphasize the Addison Foundation volunteer sheet. They are seeking volunteers for their upcoming events. Some examples are: BOOVIE NIGHT, Father Daughter Dance, Penny Wars, Mother Son Dance, Catalogue sales and general fundraising help. PLEASE PLEASE consider volunteering. You can contact them through their tab on the Addison webpage or email me your preference and I will forward it to their board. Please pick one thing to help with this year so we can make this the best year ever!

We are always in need of craft type supplies for our creative time. This can be old fabric, beads and string, stickers, ribbon, craft sticks, pipe cleaners or anything they can use their imagination to work with. Please consider an occasional donation to our art center.

Homework starts next week. Be on the lookout for the journals to come home on Monday.

Library books should be back in backpacks by Monday morning. We will return them and get new ones each week.

Thank You To:
  • Mrs. Crosby and Mrs. Hammond for volunteering to be our co-room moms! Thank you so much for volunteering. We are definitely in good hands!
  • Audrey, Sawyer, Daniel, Mae-Claire, Jacob, Kendal, Will, Eldabelle, and Duncan who have already earned their first STAR behavior reward! We cannot wait to see what they choose as their first rewards!
  • Carter, Duncan, Elaina, Gabe and Caitlyn who were brave enough to read their first books to others outside our classroom!
  • Harrison who said 1 is the right number of moms because his mom is special and so special that there can only be one like her.
  • Eldabelle who said 1 is the right number of sisters for her. Not 0 and for sure not 2.
  • All the kids who gave great answers for what we want zero of in class like: hungry tigers, fires in our beards, pushing kids, zombies, scares and sharks that don't need water to swim
