Mrs. Powers' Kindergators

Happy first week of Kindergarten! It has been a really smooth transition so far, so thank you parents. Here are some things we worked on this week: Rules, rules and more rules. What to do if you don't know what to do......raise your hand or look for a clue! Who are the people in your campground (school)? Who are the people in you camp (through sharing our all about me bags)? Next week we move into our regular schedule and begin curriculum. Our focus will be getting used to the schedule, building independence and an "I can" attitude. Look for an update next week to see how well we did. On Friday we introduced our color chart. We will be talking more about this at Open House on Thursday night, but thought you might want to see what it looks like before hand. The chart is used as a continuum so students can see how successful their choices for the day have been throughout the day. They move up or down or up and down during the day with each choice they make. Land on purple or black and earn a STAR towards your reward chart. Watch out for red or a couple of oranges in a row which means a note home to your parents. What a great day Friday was with everyone on the happy side, blue or higher!!

We are so excited about this year in kindergarten!  This year we hope to develop a love of learning in your child as he or she become readers, writers and mathematicians. We hope to inspire them to try new things and think differently about the world around them. We want them to ask questions and develop their ability to observe the wonders of the world. To help your child be the best student he or she can be, we will need a lot of help from you. Here are some ways you can help your child this year. 1. Check over this blog. It contains resources that explain what your child will be expected to know and strategies to help them be academically successful. 2. Read with your child every night. This includes you reading to your child, and after they know some letter sounds and sight words, them reading a bit to you. 3. Communicate often with your child's teacher. No backpacks or lunchboxes are allowed for the last day of school. We will send home all paperwork on Monday and Tuesday so please clean out your child's binder each day. If you child is bringing a lunch on Wednesday, please make it a sack lunch. (And see below for more lunch details.) Kindergarten through 2nd grade awards day will be Wednesday, May 22nd at 9:30. Every child in our class has earned at least one award, so we hope you will all be there to see them receive it. Please plan on arriving early as parking will most likely be an issue that day. After the ceremony, we will have a class picnic on the back playground. Please let us know if you intend to bring a lunch in for your child that day or have them purchase one from the cafeteria. Addison has a last day tradition of honoring the fifth grade graduates with a walk of honor and then giving a big fun send off to the buses. Thank You So Much To Our Parent Teachers!    We had some of the best parent pedagogy lessons of all time this year.  Mr. Beeman taught about the science of soccer. Mr. Puerta taught us about engineering and let us build with pasta noodles. Tiger Rock Martial Arts taught us about focus and self control. Mrs. Crosby taught us about birds and feathers and brought her mini parrots in to visit. Mr. and Mrs. Holmes instructed us on basketball dribbling and brought Pounce the mascot with him. Mrs. Stewart taught us about mindfulness and careful listening. Mrs. Beeman taught us about travel and maps. Kid Chess gave us a beginners chess lesson that the kids loved! Mr. Kerns taught us about lighting and helped us make our own lanterns. Mrs. Kerns taught us about musical theater and helped us find the courage to perform.
