Kindergator Update 2.7.20

Hello again Kindergator Parents! I am watching the tiny snowflakes fall and picturing the kiddos outside, mouths open, catching them on their tongues. Hmmm…now I am picturing us grown up doing it too! Here’s what we worked on while we weren’t obsessing about snow this week.

Reading: We continued working on “2 vowels go walking” tricks in all our reading groups. In some of our groups we have moved on to “putting all the tricks together” and you will notice lots of color coding on the books they bring home as we highlight the different tricks we notice. A few of our groups are now focusing much more on comprehension strategies. Our goal is to help them stop and think about what they read after they have learned to sound out all the words.  We also want them to start asking questions after they realize they do not understand a part.

In whole group reading we kept working on comparing and contrasting fairy tales and thinking about the character traits the characters showed in the stories.

Math: We worked heavily on subtraction this week. We made models from number sentences and number sentences from models. We figured out why you must start with the biggest number when subtracting and told subtraction stories that showed less or breaking apart. As we put both concepts together some kids will regress a little, but we are excited about the way they are processing the concepts so far and the vocabulary they are using to explain each.

Writing: This week we focused on sensory writing lessons to help us add to our describing word “toolkit.” We played with glue, cotton and sour patch kids. We also did a story writing assessment and will be working on writing centers next week to help students with their individual writing needs.

Vocabulary: senses, living, nonliving, organize, compare, contrast, equal

Big Things:
This is our last week of school before February break.
This week, progress reports will be coming home with your child. Please take time to look over them, sign the form and send it back in. As always, if you have any concerns or questions please let us know.
Attached to the letter is an Awards Day update about where your child is on earning an end of year award. Please look over the letter. We will update them with our next progress report too!

Thank You To:
  • Everyone who sent in STEM supplies. We are thankful and overwhelmed at the response. STEM week will be sooooooooo fun.
  • Eldbelle, Jacob, Daniel, William, Sawyer, Arielle, Hadley, Audrey, and Fiona who have already learned all 100 sight words. They have been working feverishly to earn their stuffed animals. AND we have a bunch of students over 90 words already too. They have set goals and we are seeing them independently working on them whenever time allows.
  • Eldabelle, who used her STAR behavior reward to help in our pre-k room one morning this week. The kids adored her!
  • Caitlin, Duncan, Eldabelle, Avery, Lennox, Jacob, Hadley, Elaina, Mason, Sawyer, Audrey, MC, Arielle and Fiona who earned STAR behavior this week.
  • Ethan who wrote a wonderful story about a very powerful magnet this week!
  • Dillan who wrote a super long story about he and Jacob defending a castle!
  • Madison who told the whole class about what makes a living thing living and what is the same and different about the Billy Goat’s Gruff books we read this week.
  • Gabe who wrote a whole story about a flood that knocked the roof off. (Can you tell the weather has been on our kiddo’s minds?)
  • Mason did a wonderful job showing off his letter n’s and retelling a story including the setting this week!
  • Jacob who was voted our February Camper of the Month this week.
