KIndergator Update 2.1.20


Hello again Kindergator Parents! We have had a fun week laughing, learning and programming. Here are some things we worked on this week:

Reading: We continued working on the “tricks” of “two vowels go walking” and “bully-e” in our reading groups. We began working on putting together the two reading skills of being able to sound out words and taking time to think about what they mean. At this age, the two skills are separated, but we want to plant the seed that thinking about what you read is important too. Mr. Webster began our lessons on Presidents’ day and dove into all of the fascinating places that they would take a president. We got some pretty interesting places such as Papa’s house and Disney land to Taco Bell.


Math: This week we really started to dive into the evil villain of subtraction and it’s four nasty abilities (take-away, make less, make smaller, break apart). We will start to focus on working with subtraction a little more in the upcoming weeks.


Writing: This week we continued our adventure into spicing up our story telling! All of our kiddos are getting really skilled with their openers to their stories they make! We continued working as a class to create some interesting stories with a great hook, lots of details about our wacky characters, descriptions about our environments and conflicts and how they get fixed. We also continued our writing for the writing fair contest, and we have some very imaginative students in our class this year!


Vocabulary: subtraction, decompose, hooks,


Big Things: Picture day is this week, February 4th in the morning. This is when we take our spring pictures and class pictures.

  • Ms. Audrey, who was kind enough to use her star behavior on sending the class to the front playground to play on Thursday. We all had a blast!

  • Eldabelle, for our beautiful bead necklaces
  • Mae-Claire, for showing us her friend Elsa
  • Fiona, for winning the Addison, kindergarten writing competition
  • Carter, for his funny vacuum story
  • Avery, for her amazing story about a bullied refrigerator
  • Mason and Harrison for teaching us some new multiple meaning words this week

Home Work Plan for Kindergarten

Dear Kindergarten Parents, Due to the school closures related to COVID-19, we are now moving to a digital learning plan in order to continue our learning. Each day your child should: Complete at least 10 minutes or a lesson on ReadingEggs or read on Raz-Kids and complete quizzes  Complete at least 10 minutes or a lesson on MathSeeds or Dreambox Read a story with your family ·        Write a sentence or more about your favorite part of the story in a journal or on a piece of paper. Holly Says.....

Holly says thank you to everyone who helped her understand what she should and should not bark at today. She knows now that birds have beaks, wings, feathers and two legs and do not try sneak through her doggie door like the other critters!

KIndergator Update 9.14

I am watching a 6 year old jump off a high diving board here at Georgia Tech as I type this. There is so much excitement and fear at the same time in her eyes as she gets ready to jump. It reminds me of how our kiddos look right before they sound out a big word in class. It is such fun to watch. Here are some things we worked on this week: Reading: We continued blending sounds together in guided reading groups. We began introducing the “letters that work together to make one sound” trick with blends like (sw, sn, st, sp). We also began our study of the parts of a story by discussing characters. Did you know anything can me a character if you write a story about it? We read about a blue dot as a character and a chameleon. We also reviewed th difference between real reading and fake fiction through our topic of chameleons this week. Math: We finished naming all the 2d shapes and describing them.
