Kindergator Update 1.17.20

Happy (almost) Martin Luther King Jr. Day and three-day weekend! The rain made it a yucky, mucky mess outside, but we managed to trudge through lots of skills this week. One of our favorite parts of the week was working on our new STEM project. It involves making a map of the school and programming our robots to find their way out of the building in case of a fire. A bid thank you to Dillan's family for getting us an Amazon gift card to buy the robots!

Reading: We continued our unit on Fairy Tales by reading the original version of The Frog Prince and a few alternate versions. The kids liked the idea of throwing a frog against a wall to turn it into a prince much better than having to kiss it! We continued to work on our reading “tricks” focusing on how / why vowels change their sounds from short to long and bossy-r.

Math: We continued our unit on addition. We are working on making addition models, number sentences and how you can flip-flop the numbers and still get the same answers! We worked on some new kinds of word problems and learning how to make new shapes by putting known shapes together.

Writing: This week we focused on how to write a resolution for a story. We discussed how great resolutions solve the conflict, tell how they came about and how the character feels at the end of the story. We keep reminding the kiddos to write one sentence then check it’s beginning and ending before writing another.

Vocabulary: addition, conflict, author, illustrator, fairy tale, compose, decompose, resolution

Big Things:
Don’t forget there is no school on Monday in honor of MLK Jr. Day.
Please send in an extra set of clothes with your child in case of emergency. The nurse is out of spare clothing in many sizes.

  • Duncan whose conflict turned from blue to yellow this week.
  • Dillan who wrote a great conflict about wind blowing Eldabelle away.
  • Arielle who wrote a great story about a sabre tooth lion, even if it was about a cat and all!
  • Daniel, Eldaballe, Kendal and Fiona who finished the word search challenge.
  • Lennox for helping us all spell the word lightning which is “the hardest thing to do.”
  • Mila for helping us clean up when she wasn’t even asked to and always passes her paper before taking one.

KIndergator Update 9.14

I am watching a 6 year old jump off a high diving board here at Georgia Tech as I type this. There is so much excitement and fear at the same time in her eyes as she gets ready to jump. It reminds me of how our kiddos look right before they sound out a big word in class. It is such fun to watch. Here are some things we worked on this week: Reading: We continued blending sounds together in guided reading groups. We began introducing the “letters that work together to make one sound” trick with blends like (sw, sn, st, sp). We also began our study of the parts of a story by discussing characters. Did you know anything can me a character if you write a story about it? We read about a blue dot as a character and a chameleon. We also reviewed th difference between real reading and fake fiction through our topic of chameleons this week. Math: We finished naming all the 2d shapes and describing them.
