Reading Tricks
As requested....here is a copy of our reading "tricks" chart. When we work with our students on sounding out words we ask them to stop before sounding it out and look for tricks like these:
1. Letter s that work together to make one sound (this is where we put blends and digraphs like sm, st, bl, dr, tr, fl, ch, sh, gh and so on)
2. Letters that change their sound: (like g, y, and vowels)
3. Weird O's (like ow, ou, oi)
4. Bully-E (when e jumps backward over one consonant and makes a vowel say his name as in joke or rake)
5. When 2 vowels go walking the first one does the talking and says his own name usually (as in bean or pain)
6. Bossy-R (when you have a vowel then r as in car, burn, corn)
7. Sight words (they don't follow the rules so you cannot sound them out just learn them by sight)
Feel free to use the same language we do when reading with your own kiddos at home!
