Kindergator Update 8.16.19

It was a great week in kindergarten! Here are some of the things we worked on in class this week.

Reading: We focused on the 3 things teachers want their students to do when reading (think about their reading, talk about their reading and love their reading) while reinforcing the vocabulary of what an illustrator and illustration mean. We did all this while reading fiction books about alligators underbeds, growing in water and coming to school.

Math: We worked on teen numbers, naming them, defining them as more than 10 and less that 20 that start with a 1. We learned about the words more and less as we began to subitize (know without counting) numbers shown in dots.

Writing: We worked on the illustrations for our 3 sentence stories. The illustrations must have 3 details to further explain the main picture and at least 5 colors so this is no small task. We sounded out 1 word that begins with “i” on our bubble maps.

Growth Mindset: We examined what our brains look like and how we should talk to them if we want them to work hard for us. We threw away the words “I can’t” and replaced them with “I will try” or “I know this one part at least” or “ I need a new plan.”

Social Studies: We examined maps to figure out that they show the view from above and much smaller than real life.

Vocabulary:  independent, illustrator, illustration, brain, alligator (not crocodile😉), more, less, equal to, map, brain

Big Things:
Today was Mrs. Lipscomb’s last day as Mrs. Walkup will be back next Monday.
We had 100 percent on homework this week, so Mrs. Ricci had to do her homework dance in front of everybody!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank You To:
  • Mrs. Hammond for sending in awesome art supplies for the class to use!
  • Kendal for showing amazing determination and finishing our hardest 100 piece puzzle all by herself!
  • Fiona, Hadley, Carter, Lennox, Caitlin, Eldabelle and Kendal for earning the STAR behavior this week!
  • Mae-Claire, Jacob, Kendal, Lennox, Elaina, Daniel, Sawyer, Arielle, and Mila for taking on the challenge of their first makerspace activity, the school bus picture frame.
