Kindergator Update 8.10

What an exciting first week we have had!
Lots of learning in classroom 102. It was so nice to see everyone again last night. Thank you for coming to listen.

Reading: We discussed the 4 things all great readers do:
1. Look at the pictures for clues.
2. Try to sound out some words.
3. Learn their sight words.
4. Believe they can do it!

And .....the students read their first book in class. I wish you could have seen the surprise on some of their faces when they realized that they had read a book. I hope they read The Big Cat to you at home. We learned about the difference between letters, words and sentences.

Math: We talked about why we count (to tell how many) and when we count. We thought about the difference between letters and numbers and what it means to have zero or one of something. My favorite response was "I only want one mommy because I only love her and no other mommies do I love."

Leader in Me: We worked on the term "Proactive" (being in charge of oneself, doing the right thing when no one is watching, not getting shaken up like a soda but staying calm like water). We began thinking about "Beginning with the End in Mind" and setting some class goals we can plan to work on. We will be sending home a book in a few weeks with examples of the habits and how we display them at school. There will be a section for home for you to complete with your child if you choose.

Vocabulary for the Week: Habit, proactive, illustrator, illustration

Writing: We worked on finding stories in our own heads and how pictures (illustrations) can tell a story. We began handwriting and examined tall, small and fall into the ground letters.

Big Things for the Week:

We put our "work first then play" model into place. We also worked a lot on staying focused during learning time and then releasing during our brain breaks.

Lots of our kiddos are forgetting snack. After the first week we do not keep extras in class. Please be sure to send a snack in for your child each day.

Thank you to Grant's mom for reminding me to remind you that you might want to send in a spare set of clothing to keep here in the drawers just in case an accident happens.

We can always use left over arts and crafts materials if you come across any, please send them in. The kids are LOVING creative time. Beads and necklace materials seem to be super popular if you have any around you can share.

Thank you to:
Elle, Sarah Kate, Harper H., Jackson, Reese and Harper J. who were the first to reach their STAR behavior rewards.
Everyone who came to Open House last night and listened to me ramble.
Whoever brought me coffee but left only a "thank you for a great year" written on it. It was sooo appreciated!!!!!
