Kindergator Update 3.7.20

Happy sunny Saturday! We hope you get out to play all day before next week’s rains come to wash us away. Here is what we did when not dodging puddles and  mud this week:

Reading: We are continuing to develop our independent reading skills and making sure we reread to give ourselves a chance to think about the meaning of what the words tell us. We are working on vowels a lot. This upcoming week we will be working on the “bossy-r” trick. That is when you have a vowel in front of the letter “r” and the sound of the “r” overtakes the regular vowel sound. There are 3 bossy “r” sounds: ar is the pirate sound, or like what we row a boat with and er, ir, ur that all make the same sound.

Math: This week in math we worked on extending our understanding of + and – in many ways. We worked on the two processes side-by-side with models, number sentences and word problems. We learned about the concept of “double” and “half” and how + and – can be related in a fact family of the same 3 numbers in different positions. We used that to help solve missing addend problems. Lastly, we used number lines to add and subtract by counting up and down.

Writing: This week we finished our rough draft of our black licorice opinion piece and next week we will publish them. We have been doing research on the topics of “frogs” and will soon begin our first non-fiction writing piece about them.

Health: Students finished their "How to prevent germs" projects and have posted them around the school outside the bathrooms and cafeteria. If you are in the building, look for their gemr spreading webs, what a germ might say posters and how to prevent germ spreading posters.

Vocabulary: fact family, number line, research, duckling, swan, author, illustrator, double, half

Big Things: Wednesday, March 11th is early release. Your child will be dismissed at 12:30 instead of 2:30 that day. Please be sure to write any transportation changes for that day in their agendas.
