KIndergator Update 1.24.20
Kindergator Update 1.24.20
Hello again Kindergator Parents! We have had a fun week
laughing, learning and programming. Here re some things we worked on this week:
Reading: We continued working on the “tricks” of “two
vowels go walking” and “bossy-r” in our reading groups. We began working on
putting together the two reading skills of being able to sound out words and
taking time to think about what they mean. At this age, the two skills are
separated, but we want to plant the seed that thinking about what you read is
important too.
Math: We finished out unit on addition as a process
and have begun subtraction. We discussed how addition has 4 powers (to put
together, make more, make bigger and flip-flop) and so does his enemy,
subtraction (take away, make less, make smaller or break apart). We practiced
adding zero as our fact fluency skill as well.
Writing: This week we focused on putting a great
story together. We worked as a class to create stories that have an enticing
beginning (hook), a few sentences describing the setting, a few for character,
an interesting conflict and resolution. We have had some really funny tales
happening when we work together. We also began doing some writing for the
kindergarten writing fair contest. Students are asked to write a piece
independently, and it independently. The
piece is judged as class winner then submitted as grade level winner and then
on to the county competition. Fingers crossed that one of our great writers
will win!
STEM: We completed out January STEM project this
week. The students made maps of the school then programmed robotic mice to exit
the building in case of a fire. They did a wonderful job, after they realized
that the mice could not cheat and travel through the walls! We hope they have
been able to tell you about this fun project. We need to give a big thank you
to the Civilian Air Patrol (sponsored by the US Air Force) who provided us with
materials to be able to complete the project. We love our partnership with
them.
Vocabulary: subtraction, decompose, code,
programming
Big Things: We have had some students bring in
peanuts and peanut butter for snacks recently. Please try to send in peanut
free snacks for the classroom as we have a student with and allergy. Feel free
to send them in for lunch where there is less chance of contamination.
