Kindergator Update 11.1.19

Kindergator Update 11.1.19

Well we survived Halloween on a school day and scarier yet……the day after! Here are some things we worked on this week.

Reading: We continued working on noticing and sounding out word endings. That means -ing, -ly, -ed, -s or -es. We listened for words with endings in the spooky fiction stories we read in class and then classified them into groups based on what ending they had. We spent lots of time on the what -y does at the end of a word and how it switches from a consonant sound to a vowel sound of E or I.

Math: We continued comparing numbers by using number-lines. We plotted numbers on the lines and decided which was more, less or if they were equal. We learned the symbols for comparing, the <, > and = for when the numbers are the same.

We also began our unit on word problems. The big lesson we learned is that we do not draw pictures or illustrations when solving word problems. We use math drawings instead. That means whether our problem is about fish, beads or pickles, we don’t draw the things, we draw circles or other shapes to represent those things. That moves the work along much faster and makes it easier to count to get our answer.

Writing: We moved from discussing what our characters look like to writing about hat our characters act like as we began our unit on character traits. We wrote great descriptions about monsters including discussing their positive or negative character traits. We decided drooling was definitely a negative trait!

Vocabulary: comparing, contrasting, greater, lesser, capital, capitalize, question, character traits

Big Things:
No school for kids next Tuesday. It is a professional learning day for us teachers!

Thank You To:
  • Gabe, Kendal, Hadley, Eldabelle and Avery who earned their STAR behavior this week.
  • Eldabelle and Daniel for the delicious Halloween treats.
  • Hadley, Jacob and Lennox for making me all sorts of fashion accessories this week.
  • Harrison, Dillan, Avery for incredible sounding out skills with their book Dan the Tan Man.
  • Duncan for counting to 100!
  • Mason and Mae-Claire for taking on reading some huge words in our word ending lesson all by themselves!
  • Kendal for amazing handwriting this week.
  • Fiona for becoming our football expert and learning lots of vocabulary in our guided reading this week! Now we want to know what team she will root for with all this expert knowledge.
  • Audrey, Eldabelle, Sawyer, Jacob and Daniel for building cool contraptions with our pipe toys. We really enjoyed the ladders and transporters.
  • Lennox for acting out the word “handsome” during H charades. (He didn’t do much acting out, he just figured we knew he was handsome already.)
  • Thanks to Cailtin for challenging us to figure out “hotel” as her H charade word.
  • William for a great illustration of a house and Avery for a great illustration of a horse.
  • Fiona for going above and beyond to help clean up our classroom without being asked to.
