Kindergator Update 9.20

Fall Break is here!!!!. We are making such great progress here in class, that I actually hate the idea of the week off in some ways. Still I will find a way to enjoy it, I’m sure. We will be at the beach with our German foreign exchange student! Here are some of the things we made great progress on this week:

Reading: We are prepping for our unit on retelling by working through the vocabulary of character and setting and identifying both in the books we are reading in class. We learned that when you retell a story, you always start with the characters and setting in the first sentence. And, you never refer to your character as “he” or “she” until after you tell who or what they are. We took assessments on the difference between fiction and non-fiction (real reading) this week. We kept working on our sounding out skills while reading the book “Sam and the Sap” which we will finish hopefully next week.

Math:  We are deep into 2D shapes having taught squares, rectangles, hexagons, circles and triangles already. Ask your child to describe each shape’s sides and angles. We began comparing and contrasting them too. Whew! That’s a lot.

Writing: We finished our first stories completely! They will be showing these off at October conferences and we are so excited. We already have kids putting capital letters and periods in their sentences all on their own! We learned how to make a great fiction title and began our unit on describing words.

Vocabulary: sides, angles, character, setting, quadrilateral, chameleon, camouflage, retelling

Big Things: Car trips are a great time to review letter sounds with games like “I Spy.” They make great places to practice counting too. We hope you find fun ways to keep reviewing all they have learned so far over the break.

We are planning for conferences already! If you have a certain day or time you know you cannot attend, please let us know. We will try to accommodate you as best we can.

Picture Day is October 3rd.

Thank You To:
