Kindergator Update 10.27.18
Well, it feels like Fall is here finally! The kids have
enjoyed some extra-long recesses this week in the beautiful weather. We have
also enjoyed working through some big lessons in class. Here is what we
learned:
Reading: We have been working on word endings (-ing, -ed,
-s, ly) and trying to listen for them in the stories we read in class. The kids
are doing an AMAZING job with sounding them out in the words they are reading.
We are blown away. In class they made “Bat Mobiles” that teach the many things
they have learned about bats this week. We are still working on helping the
children learn to “look for the tricks” before they sound out a word they don’t
know. Please encourage them to take a pause and find the letters that work
together to make one sound, bully e, two vowels together, bossy r or weird o’s
in the words before they try to sound it out.
Math: We began our units on comparing numbers and word
problems. For the word problem unit, we introduced the term “math drawings”
which means they do not do an illustration to show their amounts for the
problem, but use shapes to represent the amounts. For example, if the problems
reads, “Carry had 4 cats in her yard and 2 cats in her houses. How many cats
did Carry have?” your child would not draw cats at all, but represent the cats
with circles or squares or any shape they want. Please encourage this when they
encounter word problems in their homework too.
Writing: We finished our unit on descriptive words and how to
use them to paint a picture in your reader’s head. Next week we will be
starting our October stories and we are hoping students will apply the skills
they learned in their next story!
Science: We focused on how shapes move and how we can
predict how they will move based on their shape.
Vocabulary for the week: texture, compare, greater, less,
more, fewer, equal
Big Things:
Please be sure to return your field trip permission slips if
you have not already done so.
We had many cold children at recess this week. Please send
in a jacket or coat with your child each day just in case. We go out to play a
full recess in any temperature above 45 degrees and a partial one if the
temperature is less so your child should bring a coat each day.
We have already had our first wave of sickness spreading
through class this week. Mrs. Watson has
asked me to ask you to please send in more Clorox wipes for us to use on the
tables each day.
Thank You To:
Elle, Arnold, Landon, Ava, Grant, Aspen and Harper H for
reaching STAR behavior this week!
Sprinkles the unicorn who came with Ava to school this week
and spread joy to all the pink pony loving people in the world.
Dilan, Jaleigh and Harper H. who joined Grant, Harper J and
Elle in the over 75 sight words club and got their “Alligator Award.”
All the parents who donated to Wednesday’s luncheon. Soup
and salad were perfect ideas for the week’s weather and such a blessing for us
to be able to try the different types. THANK YOU!
Ava and Arnold for sharing two multiple meaning words we had
never thought of before:
cast/ cast, Elle/L, and eye/I.
Harper J for all the sweet drawings she made us this week!
Everyone who made BOOVIE night a success. Our Foundation
does an incredible job and made it a fun event for all!
Sarah Kate for learning all her 3D shape names and doing a
most amazing comparison between the shapes in class.
Ava, Arnold, Grant, Jaleigh, Landon, Harper J, Elle, Aspen,
and Jackson who took on the challenge of representing the number 142 in class
this week and did it perfectly!
All the kiddos for their incredible writing such as:
“The fat
ladybug crawled in the leafy green grass.”
“It was a
spooky night in the stone graveyard.”
“Lulu
grabbed a jumbo sized chocolate chip cookie.”
“It was a
marigold orange, Halloween Dunkin Donut.”
“The fast
furry monster left a green gooey trail.”
“My
metallic (silver?) robot was playing in his robot room.”
