Kindergator Update 9.7

Happy September! We have been working hard to stretch our brains like muscled this week in kindergarten. Here are some highlights from the week:

Reading: We worked hard in connecting illustrations to the stories we were reading and trying to interpret what they depict. We also began working in some of our reading groups on looking for tricks before trying to sound out words we don't know. We classify the reading tricks into 7 categories:
1. Letters that work together to make one sound
2. Letters that change their sound
3. Weird "O's"
4. Bossy R
5. Bully E
5. Two Vowels that go Walking
Right now we are just working on getting the children to stop and say, "I need to look for the tricks!" before sounding the word out. We will be focusing on teaching each trick individually throughout the year.

Math: We began our unit on squares and defining what makes a square a square. We call defining characteristics "attributes" and will be using this word throughout the year. We held a square party for all squares or other shapes who could tell us how to become a square. It was a yummy blast! Ask your child what they know about squares today.

Writing: We are working on planning, writing and improving our sentences. Overall, writing is a huge strength for this group and we cannot wait to see where they go with it this year.

Big Things:
Please come to the Family Fun Carnival on the 14th. And please volunteer a half hour of your time to support the fun.

We have had our first full week of good reports from the lunch room ladies. This is a huge improvement for us and we added 22 minutes onto our Friday recess to celebrate. Woo Hoo!

Please read the email Britany sent about signing up for the classroom directory on the PTA website. This is what is used for birthday party invites and play dates and helps you connect with other students. We cannot give out any information to other parents unless you sign up there and agree for it to be shared so please do.

If your child is attending an after school club please be sure to write us a note in the agenda to let us know. We do not always get rosters from the office and may have no idea they are supposed to go without your help. Writing it in the agenda also helps if Mrs. Watson ever takes a day off (which we never allow) but sometimes happens. We check the agendas each day and note changes accordingly.

Thank you to:
Jaleigh, Landon, Grant, Harper J., Olivia, Sarah Kate, Jackson and Elle who earned their STAR behavior this week. We are seeing some great improvement in behavior overall and are truly thankful.

Everyone who let us know whether their child is bringing or buying a sack lunch for the field trip. If you haven't written it on the form, please email me and let me know.

Grant and Aspen who have been looking for ways to help others this week!

Rayell for her HUGE cat chalk picture. I am not a cat fan, but this cat was adorable. And Rayell for always reminding me to turn the news show on in the morning.

Landon for filling in for anyone who is absent by doing their class job without us even asking! Very Proactive!

Gustavo for having the most adorable haircut.
