Kindergator Update 8.24
We are full swing in kindergarten with lots going on. We loved reading through the homework and what the children pledged to do or not do. We had someone pledging to buy her mom lots of diamond earrings and someone else pledging not to eat flowers anymore. We cannot express how fun checking homework is for us. We learned about Hatchimoles, Kinder Joys, and Sparkle Friends as the children told us what they had more then 10 of in their house. And it turns out Jackson and I have the same number of chairs! Here are some of the things we learned about this week:
Reading: We finished looking at real reading (non-fiction) features in our alligator books. We found photographs, videos, maps, captions, labels, and diagrams. Today we compared a real reading book with a fake fiction book about bringing an alligator to school. We also worked on learning how to blend sounds by carrying your voice all the way through. If your child struggles with this there are two things that can help. Start by putting only two sounds together in the word then adding one and one more and holding their hands on their throats while they sound out to feel how the vibrations never stop if they are blending correctly.
Math: We finished our lessons on counting and worked hard on teen numbers. We spent some time on listening for the difference in teen numbers like 13, versus "ty/dy" numbers like 30. As you listen to your children count, try to help them make the "th" sound for numbers like 13 or 30 instead of the "f" sound. This may help them learn to count higher since they wont confuse the 30s and 40s by saying "firdy."
Writing: We finished illustrating our first story. They did an amazing job at adding details to their picture to show the setting or the problem of the story. These details will help them write fuller stroes as we begin our unit on becoming authors. We have lots of humans that look like humans and not stick figures too! One funny thing...most of our class draws people without adding hair for some reason.
Leader in Me: We worked on Habit #4 a lot this week with our Think Win Win lessons. We did some group activities that required them to all be united on an answer and talk about why they felt their answer was right to help everyone feel good about making the same choice. This was sooooo hard for them, but we saw a lot of growth in them finding ways for everyone to feel good for the win-win.
BIG THINGS:
Friday August 31 is Career Dress Up Day. Your child should come to school dressed as what they hope to be when they grow up. This event is to help us teach our standard about Labor Day and why we celebrate it so please help them think of interesting careers and interesting ways to represent them in costume.
I am finding that some of my emails are not going to my inbox for some reason. If you email me and do not hear back within a day, please resend it just in case.
The PTA Family Fun Carnival is coming up September 14th. It is such a fun event and we hope everyone will be here to participate. PTA will send out a Sign Up Genius for volunteers. Please, please, please sign up for a half hour or so to make the games and events fun for everyone.
Thank You To:
Zeb's family, Elle's family, Harper's family and Ava's family for sending in supplies for the kids to use in the creativity zone this week. We also got some shoe boxes from former students and the kids love them too. We hope you enjoy seeing the cool things they make.
Both Harpers for bringing in their stuffed toys for their STAR REWARD and introducing them to the class.
Aspen and Harper J who added speech bubbles to their illustrations all on their own! Great idea!
Landon for a very cool illustration where he turned the letter A into an astronaut.
Mr. Beeman who is the only person to recognize the super hero my t-shirt represented today. I have been waiting years to have someone enjoy Ironfist as much as I do!
Have a wonderful weekend!
